Centromere key
Metacentric — centromere central, arms almost equal (chromosomes 1, 3, 16, 19, 20).
Submetacentric — centromere off-centre, one arm clearly shorter (2, 4–12, 17, 18, X).
Acrocentric — centromere near one end, tiny short arm, often with a satellite stalk (13–15, 21, 22, Y). Y carries no satellite.
Where do the sex chromosomes sit? X is filed with Group C, Y with Group G — they match those groups in size and centromere position.
